It’s been a while since I have been away and high time I share with you my story as it unfolds these days. I’ve got good news and bad news… first the bad news… here it goes:
As my buddy Fabian says, getting old is not for the meek. I think he may be right. A little over a year ago I was diagnosed with the mild stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Needless to say it was a moment that stunned my family and myself to the core. Since this time I have chosen to remain private and to focus on what is most important to me: my family and my music. It has been a time to reflect and to just be. To create memories for my grandchildren and to celebrate life’s goodness. To throw baseballs and catch fish. To be the audience.
As many of you may know my beautiful wife of 48 years, Karen, is also dealing with serious health issues as we await a lung transplant for her at Duke University in Durham, NC. Together and with our amazing family we treasure each moment, and we hope and pray for the best outcomes…
Now for the good news: Shortly after this all came down, I hopped into an RV with my family and we embarked on a little odyssey from Minnesota to Tucson, AZ. Together we explored the depths of our reality… the depths of my reality. With very few words, no solutions and a lot of heart, we did what we do. We shared time. We shared laughter, tears, stories, meals and music. We shared thousands of miles of hi-way as familiar to us as the pillows on our beds. As if nothing had changed, as if everything had changed… simultaneously.
This past year has truly been life taking its own course without words that can describe the mystery and conflict that none of us can know. So without a song or a script I am stepping onto a stage that we all share: The mystery of life.
While in Tucson we set up some amps and drums in the garage of our newly built hacienda and made some music. Along the way we flipped on the tape recorder and created a little something special, something sure to last. We just did what we have always done, only this time there was no stage. There were no spotlights and no audience. We made music every day for a week… just for us. For the joy of making music. For the joy of being together. For all of the reasons I ever picked up a guitar or sang a tune in a Fargo, ND garage back in ’59. I have truly come full circle! We played songs I grew up with, songs the kids grew up with, songs we wrote, songs that had meaning and memories for us all. No agenda, no set list, no tickets to sell… This was all we have ever done, and all we could do. So we did it.
The video on this website is a preview of the music we intend to share with you all soon. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for every musical moment we’ve shared. It has truly been a magical odyssey. We have been blessed… and the road goes on. I look forward to hearing from you and hope to see you again down the line~

They have always been a class act and without question one of the most professional groups we ever met. But much more than that, we have been honored to become friends with this amazing family. Karen has faced serious health problems for a number of years and as they progressed and worsened, Karen met each new challenge with the grace and dignity that we all hope we will have.

I’ve got a similar story to Big Al’s. I saw you in Denver many years ago at a place called Mammoth Gardens, a skating rink. The girls were jumping up and down and I said ‘That’s what I want to do!”. Music is all I’ve ever done. I got lucky with some songs, “Bluer Than Blue” being one of them. I’ve thanked you many times over the years and I thank you again now my friend! The Adobe Sessions is beautiful.

Hes is the regional Halls and those Folks who elected him agreed he should be in Cleveland,, I keep sending letters every year, Telling the Hall Election Committee- “look at all those signatures on that Petition we delivered”…When ever I see the Vee’s or Robbie perform I see that great Bobby Vee talent and their Parents great personalities and Handsome Looks.. I am sad to hear this news. But, I take considerable comfort in knowing what a joyous, successful, full career/life you’ve had and will continue to have. During my time in “the business”, I met and spent time with numerous “celebrities”. I can honestly say you were/are one of the finest, kindest, most genuine individuals I spent time with. One of the highlights of my K-tel years was the conversation we had en route to a WCCO radio interview (in the midst of a huge blizzard) that led to the release of “Bobby Vee and The Shadows – The Early Years” which included my (still) all-time favorite “Suzie Baby”. Bobby, saw you in person twice. The first time was in 1962 in Japan where you and The Ventures appeared at Tachikawa AFB entertaining the troops. The second time was in Salt Lake City in the mid 60’s. As an old radio DJ, I played many of your songs on my radio shows in the ’60s and always looked forward to your new records showing up. I must also mention that my buddies and I listened avidly in the summer of ’59 when KDEO in San Diego ran the big promotion centered on “Suzie Baby”.
I’ve enjoyed too many of your recordings to list, so I am especially impressed by total quality of your recordings. I will say that your “Greatest Hits, Vol. 2” has most of my personal favorites.

Like millions of teens I picked up on Bobby at “Devil Or Angel” and really got on the bandwagon with “Rubber Ball” blasting out of my Toshiba while delivering newspapers. Literally “Stayin’ In” and sneaking the Toshiba into my desk during summer school… I can still see the picture sleeve for “Please Don’t Ask About Barbara” peering out of the 45 rack in the grocery store. I bought all the singles and albums with paper route & lunch money, it was much more important than actually eating lunch. Without Bobby the world would have been much less bearable in those days after 11/22/63. “Charms”, “Punish Her”, a monster album with The Crickets… Then that killer single “I’ll Make You Mine” during the British Invasion. When I first met him at a car show in Decatur, Illinois, in the 80’s I was finally exposed to the truth – Bobby Vee the person is as nice and cheerful as Bobby Vee the recording artist and every bit as friendly as the smiling face on those teen ‘zines would suggest. I asked him to play “Please Don’t Ask About Barbara” at that car show, backed up by the greatest little rock ‘n roll band in the world – the Vees – and he not only added it to the set, he dedicated it to me! That night I saw him sign autographs and engage in friendly chatter hour after hour until literally there was nobody else in the room. Of course that was and has always been the norm with Bobby Vee. I grew up totally obsessed by music and educated in melody and lyrics by listening to Bobby and his friends in the music scene like Del Shannon & Gene Pitney. I wasn’t pretty enough to be Bobby Vee, but the Beatles gave kids like me a format to take that step forward. In 2004 my band was inducted into the Iowa Hall Of Fame, the same year as Bobby Vee, which knocked me out totally. I couldn’t help myself, I became a shaky teenager again and managed to re-meet Bobby & the band, still just as nice as ever. I was able to introduce my wife to one of my heroes and his “I Wouldn’t Change A Thing” has been a regular in our CD player ever since. I was able to repay some of the debt I owe to Bobby & his music by writing a review of that fabulous & personal singer/songwriter album for Goldmine magazine, and then to do a career-spanning interview with Bobby that became a 6-part, 6-issue feature, also in Goldmine. Then along with many others, I began bugging the Rock ‘n Roll Hall Of Fame for Bobby’s grossly overdue induction, still yet to happen. I hope that oversight is corrected while Bobby and family can still enjoy it. Make it happen. Most of all, thanks Bobby, you are a permanent part of the fabric of the lives of more people than even you have time to meet after the show, around the world. You’re the best.

Everyday seems to bring more bad news to the rock and roll performers of our era. A true reality check as to our age. So many people grew up on this music, and your songs left a ledgendary impact on us. I can always remember where I was and what I was doing when I listen to Rubber ball, walking with my angel. Bobby, When I was a kid around 14 years old, Buddy Holly died. I had never experienced anything like that in my family or with my friends. I was devastated, couldn’t even go to school that week. A few months later, you came out with SUZIE BABY, which got a lot of airplay up in massachusetts where I lived. It as such a great record, and it was such a loving tribute to the style of Buddy. Suddenly, I realised that the spirit of Buddy Holly wasn’t gone- you picked it up and breathed new life into it with your songs and band It gave me new hope. So, if you hadn’t ever accomplished any more than JUST that, it would have been enough. But you made lots of great music over the years. I saw you several times, I even have your autograph (I think from the Reno show you did for Dick Clark in about 1975). I got to be friends with you on your music board on AOL, and you’re just really a top notch stand up guy. It’s with great sorrow I discover that you and your wife have been hit with some serious health problems. I’m wishing you all the best, and sending out a batch of thank yous and good vibes for the many years that you’ve brought joy to me and probably every one else that ever heard your music. God speed. I saw you perform back in the summer of 1963 at Reggie’s Danceland in Excelsior Park, Minnesota. Do you remember that performance? You were fabulous! I became a fan of yours right away in 1959 after the Buddy Holly tragedy. Having grown up in western Wisconsin just outside of the twin cities, it was regional news, and I recall that the music industry referred to you as the “Fargo Flash”. And having the name of Bob Viebrock and being a Bobby Vee fan my friends called me by the name of “Bobby V”. Wishing you and your family in the future the very best. I’ve been proud to have been named after you by your friend/my dad (Myron Lee) ever since I started listening to your great album “Nothin’ Like A Sunny Day” when I was a kid. That album probably first introduced me to country rock, and I still have it today. I did some editing on the priceless 8mm home movies that my dad made when he was touring with you in the early 1960s. Every time you appeared in the films I always noted the obvious charisma and star quality you had, even when you were just relaxing and goofing off for Myron and the camera. It’s funny, but I saw your movie “C’mon, Let’s Live A Little” on TV when I was a kid, and although I only saw it once, I can still remember parts of it to this day.
So, I just wanted to quickly share that with you and wish you, Karen and your family the best.

As we are 2nd generation Bobby Vee fans, we have been so blessed to get to know Bobby Vee and his family over the years. We just were ten years old listening to the oldies radio station years ago and then “Take Good Care Of My Baby” was played. That sealed our fate! Meeting Bobby all those years ago at Ontario Place after his show was so special to us both! He was wearing a baseball hat! We are sad about Bobby’s condition. it is not fair. Today, it was hard to concentrate @ work as we thought of Bobby and Karen. Bobby, you will never leave our hearts. Thank you for all the wonderful memories your family and you have given us. You will always be the cutest Minnesotan we know! Ha! We can see Karen smiling right now!

Dear Bob and Karen, I have no idea as to where to start this note that will turn into a letter. I think I could write a book with all the memories that I have enjoyed with you and your family. From our first meeting in 1979 in Denever at the car show it was friendship right from the start. Although we never met at the time it was 1959 that I first saw you as a teenager in Eau Claire,WI. Then we were together in so many places, Clear Lake and the “unfinished sentences”, Lubbock, TX, Vail, CO, Castle Rock, CO, the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, CO, Denver, CO and all the great shows that you did at those places. The skiing at Copper Mountain, CO with your whole family was a most wonderful time. Then you came to my house in Evergreen, CO and you were only going to stay a short time and after about four hours we still hadn’t said it all or looked at all the items in my museum.
I never looked at you as a star, to me you were just my friend and if you never sang another song that’s the way I wanted it to be, just friends. You were always so down to earth and just so easy to be around. It’s a friendship that I’m proud to tell others who haven’t been so lucky to meet you. I am proud to tell others all about you and I always will. That’s the Bob that I will always remember forever and ever.
I had heard about your condition before you ever wrote this letter. I prayed that it wasn’t true and I have thought so much about you almost everyday and I will continue to pray for both you and Karen and to keep you both in my thoughts daily.
I wish you both only the best and I hope that we can stay in touch. You have given us so much with your music, it’s now our turn to give you all the support in the world. There is an army of friends and fans out there wishing you only the best.

BOBBY, WE can’t turn back the clock (although I wish we could at times), but we most certainly can turn on the CD recorder, where music of the early 60’s will ALWAYS resonate in my mind & in my heart. To say your songs where so vivid, memorable, and were parlayed into actual learning devices would be an understatement in itself. We met when you were taking tickets at the Scrambler at the Red River Valley State Fair in Fargo in the summer of ’58. Mad crush! Imagine my surprise when, having gone to the Moorhead Armory that fateful February night to be with others to mourn the loss of some of the greats, I saw you standing in the back of the balcony before for the show began. You were nervous. I asked, “You’re going to perform? What do you do?” You replied, “Oh, I sing a little.” And, you’ve been singing ever since.
I am sad to hear of your illness and Karen’s struggle and I wish you and your family all of the love, strength and music you will need in the days ahead. You have given pleasure to so many over the years. Now, take as much of it as you as you can get; you deserve it.

I have known you since Emerson Smith Elementary days. That is a long time ago. I was so fortunate to live in Fargo at the time you were beginning your career. My friends and I danced to your music at the Crystal Ball Room on Friday night. I remember when you were courting Karen, and would come to Dahl Hall at MSU to pick her up. Dancing to your music in Detroit Lakes at the time of my 25th class reunion was also special. My husband and I attended a concert at the Pantages Theater in Minneapolis a few years ago. It was great to hear you sing once again. It was also exciting to know that your boys were continuing the music tradition. I wish you and Karen much strength and comfort in the journey ahead. Bobby you have brought so many have memories to me throughout the sixties………you’ve definately been my favorite male singer during that period of my youth……..having been born in 1950………I discovered you early on and knew that I had found a “friend”.
I have seen you in various concerts over your career………one memorable show was at small motel in Ohio where you, the late Del Shannon and Buddy Knox were performing.
I had an opportunity to chat with you for awhile and you signed a couple autographs for me……..when you noticed I had a Del Shannon album with me……..you invited me to go with you to the room where Del was staying and got him to autograph my album.
You are one of the most REAL entertainers that I’ve ever met………willing to go the extra mile and do things for fans that most entertainers would never do.
I’ve chatted with you a couple times after that occasion at different venues throughout the midwest……..and at one point you looked at me and actually recognized me……..I was amazed………and made very humble for your kindness in remembering our past chats.
Bobby……..I love you as a true artist, family man (I got to see you perform with your boys…..very sweet) and a great great entertainer.

Like so many others our age your songs were our lives – every song had meaning and we related. I never met you, but as others have said I know every word of every song, and at one time (before I left to spend 30 years in the military) I was your fan club president. I married my “Suzie Baby” after I thought I had lost her when the song was popular and we celebrate #40 this fall.

Over the years you have made every one of us feel so very special. I am sure we can all remember how we felt the first time each of us met you. I remember how very kind you were to Sue Cokley (the other half of “The Two Sues”!) when she was so ill – the surprise of your lovely card and cheery words set her on the road to recovery.
Last Saturday I went to a school reunion and met school mates I had not seen since we left in 1964. One of the girls came up to me and said “I remember you Sue ……. you used to love Bobby Vee” ……… my response – “I still do!!” …. and still imagine that Susie Baby was just for me!

I have been a fan of yours since the Winter of 1961 after seeing you and the Ventures perform in Terry’s Arena in Terrytown, Nebraska, which was a privately owned town between the cities of Scottsbluff and Gering Nebraska. I recall that the Ventures, Bogle and Wilson, opened the show and then introduced you. I bought all of your 78 albums and played them over and over again in my dorm room on the campus of Chadron State College, in Chadron, Nebraska, where I was a Freshmen a the time. You brought a classy form of popular music to those of us who were from small town America backgrounds, living away from home. Thanks much for your contribution to American popular music! I was lucky enough to see you perform at last year’s “Joe Town Rocks” show and you signed a drum stick for me. I told you that I had been trying for two years to find a way to see you in concert and you asked, “Was it worth it?” To that I replied, “ABSOLUTELY!!!” I was so thrilled and honored when you complimented me on my petition that I started to get Tommy James and the Shondells inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It’s comments like yours and the ones I’ve gotten from the other singers that have signed it that has kept me going with it. I’m about 500 away from my goal of 10,000 and will reach that when I see Tommy in June at Shooting Star Casino. Many people have asked me to work on getting you in the Hall as well, esp. your fans that I’ve met at the Kato Ballroom in Mankato MN. Hopefully it will happen for BOTH OF YOU SOON!!! Hi Bobby: It is true what Fabian said about growing old. In February I did 4 eulogies for friends. My wife Carole and I think of you often. We won’t forget meeting with you in Hollywood on our Honeymoon and you taking us around seeking the best Hot Dog in the city and of course Pinks was the winner. Those were wonderful simple times and we were all young. And then there was the cruise we all shared and had the opportunity of having some social time together. The last time we met was when I booked you into the Legends of Rock and Roll series at Expo ’86. You are a very special guy and we respect you for never forgetting your roots through all the success you have enjoyed over the years. I was shocked when I heard that another friend Glen Campbell has the same disease. Like you he is handling it with style and class. My best to you and Karen and the family. I know what it is like to be hit with bad news but they say God never gives you more than you can handle. All we can do is give it to him and make the most of the life we have. Bobby I feel it is my responsibility to tell you this story. I have a close friend who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and i convinced him to start enjoying coconut oil and in 2 weeks he was doing better and it just keeps getting better the longer he takes it. He started eating about 4 tablespoons a day and has cut it to 2 a day since he is in control now. I pray you will try it so you will be able to take care of that beautiful wife for a while longer. Bobby- Please go to Gary Null’s website (www.GaryNull.com). I don’t know if you are familiar with his work, but he has a Ph.D. in nutrition and has written many books and created many documentaries. Anyhow, on his website there was (and possibly still is) a video of a woman he successfully treated for Alzheimer’s. Her name is Maureen McGovern (not the singer — this Maureen McGovern is a college professor). Gary reports that he treated her with something called Ozone therapy, and she (Maureen) speaks of her dramatic recovery. I sincerely hope that you will check this out — you have everything to gain and nothing to loose. All the best…

Hi, Bobby. You are one of my favorite teen performers–probably because you’re a North Dakoa boy and you sang a “Suzie” song. One winter evening after you and your brother performed at the Grand Forks Skating Rink and after you stowed away the band equipment, my friend, Nancy, and I had a snowball fight with the two of you. In fact, she told me recently she has a picture of us playing in the snow. Whenever I hear one of your songs on the radio, it takes me back to that evening. If I’m with a friend when I hear your song, I always tell them about the snowball fight we had. I wish you and your family the best. I was deeply saddened to learn from this morning’s (5/2) AJC of your diagnosis. Searching further, I also became aware of your wife’s medical problems. I can emphathize, in that I’ve recently learned that, in spite of surviving three resuscitations following sudden cardiac arrest, I’ve now developed cancer in various organs. So, I’m with you in facing a poor prognosis which has had me focus on that which really matters — relationships. Perhaps you still recall appearing for me when I was at WOKY – Milwaukee and booked you with Bobby Vinton’s orchestra in 1960. From that meeting, I’ve always admired you, not only as a performer, but as a genuine, unpretentious, caring individual. In my relatively brief radio career, I worked with many “stars”, but few command the deep personal respect I have had, and continue to have, for you. Use two words to describe Bob: dignity and integrity. When I think of your family I have fond memories. Bob and I having a cup of coffee during our annual block party while the boys were performing out in front of the bank. Saying hello in Branson a few years back (made it feel like we were home somehow). The christmas CD we were involved in. The wonderful recognition at the Paramount gala…one of the greatest honors of my life was being asked to say a few words. I’ve been priveleged, I guess, to meet a lot of musicians and other celebrities in my life but I’ve never known anyone with as much integity and dignity as Bob. I see it in the boys and that’s the most gratifying thing that can happen in anyone’s life: When our children reflect our good qualities. God bless you and Karen, there are so many souls who wish you well and we look forward to hearing from you for a long time.

The first time I met you Bobby was at Wolfman Jack’s in Orlando, Fl back in the 90’s. I told you that I was in “love with you” since I was 13. To which you replied “you’ve held up well”. I’ve seen you twice since then, once in Baltimore for a charity concert and the second time at Cypress Gardens. I always requested “Charms”, which you played for me. I was disappointed when I found out you were no longer touring, but now I understand and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your lovely wife and family. In my message, I identified myself as the teacher turned looking back radio DJ from Collingwood Ontario to whom you very graciously granted an interview in your hotel room at Casino Rama, Orillia, early spring 2004. As it turned out, your interview along with your music became a 25 minute spotlight to kick off our second hour of John and Dave’s Flashback Diner on The Peak FM Collingwood and The New CHAY Barrie. Alas, after 6 years, the Diner closed. However, I continue to do fundraiser looking back dances in our area—-and I always make sure that Bobby Vee is on the playlist!

My first memories of life include your beautiful voice music hearing it , I think I new every lyric by the time was 3 maybe 4 yrs old to each of your songs , they have given me so much joy over the years . Sadly unlike most that have posted here I,ve never seen you perform , I don,t know why maybe timing life my hubby (soldier ) died leaving me with 3 children to care and provide for ..I,m glad to say we made it through all , I just wished to convey my affection and admiration for you , oh my you were so handsome adorable I think I know I had a huge crush on you guess i still do . Thank you you,ve touched more lives them you know & eased many of us throgh lifes challenges .. I was a caregiver for my father for many years he too suffered from Alzheimers but I want you to know that my father was able to communicate walk do many of his own ADL skills oh sometimes he needed a verbal prompt or a helping hand but overall he was as independent on many things . I wanted you to know that . When we first found about him he was heartbroken still from losing my Mom (married 65 yrs ) We found a routine that worked for my father and daily we went and continued on each day he had activities walks together weekly visits to see his old friends relatives even everyday stuff grocery shopping etc , I think by keeping him busy (napped in afternoons ) active and the new meds they have to slow the progression well gave him quality of life and helped to maintain his independence . I,ve seen this happn to others as well (worked in nursing ) , I just wanted to share this with you ! The very first time my Dad excepted the fact that he indeed did have it we had a long heart to heart and I promised him that if and when the time came when he could no longer process or decide or even do something that I would be right there by his side and pick up where he left off , I promised him i would stay by his side we would get through it together . I know he was scared tho he never said so he didn,t have too . I ,m sorry I,ve been so personal in this but I want you to have & keep hope alive . Thank you so very much Bobby Vee ,, When hearing your songs I still see that handsome young man I have had a crush on for 50 yrs , I will keep Karen and you the whole family in my prayers each day , you will always be in my heart

We still talk about how much fun Bill and Kathleen had with ya’ll in Clearlake, Iowa and how gracious Karen and you were during that time. Our little Kathleen just turned 23 and is stationed overseas with the Air Force and I know you are as proud of her as we are. She is especially fond of you guys. I have had the pleasure of seeing you at the Surf Ballroom numerous times in recent decades and to have a word with you at a lot of these occasions. Once you saw me and my WORT-FM buddy Rockin’ John McDonald and said “Rockin’ and Reelin’ – you’re here. Why am I not surprised?” What a day-brightener that was, and what fun times we’ve had in Clear Lake. One cannot help but feel upbeat thinking about your shows and enjoying the music you have blessed us with over the years. “Something To Say” is among my favorites.

Hey Bobby….from one old Fargo neighbor to another…it has been years but I’ve followed your wonderful career as have all of us from the Fargo Central class of ’60. We all wish you well and love your music! All our best to you….Roberta…Linda…Marilyn..Joni…Jane…on and on…love and care to you and Karen and your family.
My husband and I attended the Nelson Twins concert in Springfield, MO, a couple of weeks ago and, when the band came on, I told my husband, who is blind, that the bass player had a bass instrument like Tommy Vee and he was playing it crazily like Tommy did! But I didn’t recognize Tommy with his moustache and hat! We were so pleased when your sons were introduced and watching Tommy again made the evening so much more special. We waited afterwards to talk with him (but never did see him) as we wanted to know why he wasn’t playing in your band and whether you were still performing.
We saw you many times at the Dick Clark Theatre in Branson–we moved to Forsyth in 2006, the year that the Dick Clark Theatre had so many wonderful groups from the 50’s and we saw them all!. As I’ve read in all of the comments posted, we also felt that you are truly a gentleman, generous to your fans, and just a very pleasant fellow. That summer was a highlight of the years we’ve lived near Branson and have gone to many, many shows each year.
My mom had Alzheimer’s and, in fact, I’m wearing right now the Alzheimer’s Walk t-shirt I got in Branson a couple of years ago when Andy Williams led our September walk, as he does each year in honor of his brother who also had the disease. Our prayers for you and your wife and your family–and we will sign any petition for you to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as you should already be (the Comets just were inducted last month–another one of our favorite groups here in Branson).

I read the information regarding your health and that of Karens with dismay, and I have to give you both back the same message you sent to my father (Clint) in September of ’95 “Let’s Keep Rocken – your ND friend – Bobby Vee”
Reflecting back on the “good times” while looking at my dad’s income journal this morning, I see he paid you and the Shadows $270.48 to play at his Bachelor’s Grove (ND) establishment July, 8, 1959… Not to feel badly as he only paid Buddy Knox $260.00 for a similar gig on July 22, 1959. I do know things got a lot better for you as time rolled on.
I have had the privilege and opportunity to meet with you many times at Bachelor’s Grove, in Grand Forks, Maple Lake, St. Cloud as well as at the Minnesota State Fair. Thanks for your music, the many dances I enjoyed as well as the great memories!
Hello Bobby and family. Thinking about you all the time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you from Madison Wis. I’ve played a “ton” of your music on my radio program. “Reelin'” John Lindquist and myself have done several Bobby Vee radio specials over the years and I’ve had The Vees as featured artists. I love the new recording. I can’t wait until the whole CD comes out. I did a bunch of songs on my May 5th program that had “Sue”, “Susie”, “Suzie”, “Suzanne” and “Susan” in the title. One of the first songs that I played was “Suzie Baby” You and your family are such great people. I’m writing this with a heavy heart. Well in Denmark we could only hear Radio Luxembourg and the first time I held a girl and kissed her, you were singing : ” take good care of my baby ” on Radio Luxembourg.
No, I did not marry the girl and no, we didn’t do anything naughty
we were so young and innocent
To go out open with your illness ( and your wife’s ) are brave and I do hope we find a cure soon of Alzheimers.

Please Bobby I hope you don’t mind me sharing with you my memories of you and your music on your blog.’ The first time I saw you sing on English television was on the Perry Como show, before that show it was only possible to hear you sing on my transistor radio tuned into the only pop station we could pickup in the UK, Radio Luxembourg which faded in and out. I hadn’t even reached my teens but you and the songs you sang have stayed with me throughout my life. I went to see you at the Winter Gardens in Margate, Kent, SE England, in the 80s and again in the 90s. At both shows you asked for a song request, both times I shouted as loud as I could “Letter from Betty “, but both times the crowd shouted for “Devil or Angel ” which you sang beautifully….. but you never sang “LfB”. Then just after your daughter got married (you told us that you sang Take Good Care of my Baby at her wedding) , I went to see your show at the Lees Cliff Hall in Folkestone, Kent, this time accompanied by my 6ft 3 husband and two young male colleagues from work ( who were inquisitive about why I praised your shows so much (they came out loving the live band and your show too )). They were under strict instructions to yell as loud as possible for “Letter from Betty ” AND it worked, you said you would have to check the words during the break as you hadn’t sang it for some time. When you came out and sang LfB I was in heaven singing the song along with you at the top of my voice and again when you went on to sing “A Forever Kind Of Love ” ….bliss!
After the show, it was the first time I ever found the courage to go to up to the stage, I wanted to thankyou so much but I could barely talk, I just couldn’t do anything other than give you the biggest smile I had ever smiled in my life (did you see me 🙂 🙂
Now I’m saying thank you for being the best idol anyone could have ever have wished for throughout the whole of their life.

Bobby, I would not know where to begin to share the memories I have of you and the many concerts we have attended over the years. It began so long ago at the Fiesta Ballroom in Montevideo, MN in the early 60’s to the last time which was in Virginia, MN when you honored my request to sing “Please Don’t Ask About Barbara” for my very good friend on her birthday. During all that time, you remained my number 1 singer. It wasn’t only due to your music, but the kindness and sincerity you always showed us when we were able to visit with you at a concert. It goes back to helping Clela with the many fan letters you received to the time you returned my scrapbooks to me in St. Cloud. Your family has impressed us so much over the years, how great they all are. Your invitation and personal tour to us at Rockhouse? I stood back and thought, “Can this be real?” I don’t believe there could be any entertainer that would do that for their fans–but you considered us friends, what more could we have wanted? We were honored to be able to attend the induction on Friday night in Fargo. Matt was so sincere in his appreciation in accepting your award. And, for him to accept for Bill as well? I know he struggled and was so touched by the recognition.
We plan to see Robby on Friday night. He carries on the tradition of the music your family has created. And, the Vee’s?? We have enjoyed them each and every time we have seen them perform. They share their children and their musical talents as well.
You and Karen have done a beautiful job raising your children. As much as we miss you, I am so grateful you are taking the moments for yourself to spend time with your family. Memories they will cherish forever.
My best to you and Karen, you are both in my thoughts daily, God Bless You –never forget the impact you have had on all your fans. We love you and wish you and your family only the best.
I have been a fan for so long (early 1960’s!) that it is as though I am writing to a friend now. My mom was diagnoised with Alzheimer’s about 4 years ago, so for Mothers Day this year I put a playlist together for her. Thousand Eyes absolutely her fav. (along with many others of yours) I believe when the music is “in” you it never leaves you…its always a part of you. Life has its etnas and pot holes, but our hearts can still smile for all we have been blessed with. I have beat cancer 3X in the last 10 yrs, and I sing almost all the time..my kids probably hate it..and in my 60’s now I go ballroom dancing whenever I get the chance. Thats whenever I can get a partner…nope, its not over yet! God Bless you and yours…we can’t understand everything, but I don’t need to..just enjoy what you have been blessed with and , of course, keep singing!!

I read of many new drugs and treatment that are being developed/pioneered both here in the UK and no doubt in the US, so, modern medicine can, if nothing else, control things and offer some quality life.

My wife (still newlweds after 45 years) and I have seen you perform twice – once at the Whittemore Center at UNH about 8 or so years ago and last year at the Hanover Theater in Worcester, the Bandstand show. Each time was a thrill. I was fortunate to get to speak with you in Worcester at the ‘meet and greet’ session, as well as with Chris Montez and the Chiffons. You may recall my comment, that any youngster with a guitar could have stood in at the Fargo show the day after Buddy Holly’s untimely death, and that kid would have been forgotten a month later unless that kid was someone as greatly talented as you are. You are a true gentleman, as gracious as you are talented. We send our thanks to you for all of the years of wonderful music and our sincere best wishes to your wife and you.

My sister & I had tickets to the Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, & Ritchie Valens, concert at the Armory in Duluth, Mn., 1959. You, Bobby Vinton, & others had filled in for them after that horrible plane crash. We were the two black girls standing in the front of the stage. You kept smiling & winking at me throughout your time on stage. Thank you for making me feel special that night, especially during a time of racial tension in our country. Teenagers like to be recognized by the artist on stage. Sorry, about the health issues you and your beautiful wife are enduring. My prayers are with you two. Dear Bobby, When I first read your letter on the website I felt so sad to hear your news,it has been such a very difficult time for you all,my thoughts have stayed with with you and your family. Wonderful news that Karen now had the transplant and wish her a safe and full recovery. As one of your many fans you touched my life with your music. I have so many memories. I remember saving up to buy my first LP Bobby Vee ‘s Golden Greats and going into one of the local record shops to listen to A Forever Kind Of Love in one of those booths which were popular at that time, I was completely blown away It still remains a favourite.
As a young teenager growing up in the sixties I collected autographs, I reserved the middle pages in the hope that I would one day get your autograph. The dream came true in Sept 1988 after your concert in Portsmouth. I met you with my two teenage daughters. Finally I got your autograph on the pages I had reserved all those years ago. I was on cloud nine for days. I have been so privileged to meet you and your lovely family on a number of occasions. You took the time to talk and have photos taken, those moments are very special. I’m so glad that we had the opportunity to pay you a visit at the Jo Town Rocks festival at Minnesota last year, we enjoyed every second there, and were made to feel so welcome, thank you so much. I did not hear of the news of the illnesses of Bobby and Karen until today. I hope Karen’s transplant will be successful. Bobby, my thoughts are with you as you continue your journey with this disease.
I was privileged to see you at the Iowa State Fair many times. We would sit there as long as you were going to appear and watch all of your performances. We were supposed to see you at the Diamond Jo Casino in Dubuque in December 2009, but you fell ill. The Vees gave us a mini-concert. Unfortunately for us, the make up date was on the same night as my nephews college graduation and family comes first. I had no idea it would be my last opportunity to see you.
I did write you and you were kind enough to send a Christmas card to me, which I cherish.
You and Karen are in my thoughts now and forever. Take care.

Bobby, this life really takes twists and turns that we never thought of when we were teenagers in the 1960’s. Gracious, it was a good time! By chance I entered your website(suffering 60’s music withdrawals) as I had contacted the site some time ago and had a very nice reply from your son. I was hoping to see you in the UK at some time. I must say reading your letter upset me so much but my immediate thought was “how wonderful to be such a loving and close family” I am sure that you will have many happy and fruitful years ahead. I was lucky enough to see you in London in the early 60’s and then again maybe 2 decades later. I hope this little story of my Bobby Vee obsession brings a smile to your face.
In 1962 my mother gave me ten shillings (1 dollar then, I think) to collect a roll of wallpaper for my Father to finish decorating our sitting room. This I was to do on my way home from school. Forever the dreamer, I found the money in my purse and honestly did not know why it was there. A LOTTERY WIN!!! I went immediately to the record shop and bought ‘RUN TO HIM’ I was playing the record when my mother returned from work and of course she asked me where I had put the wallpaper. You can imagine the scene.
I remember that she said” Your Father cannot paper the walls with RUN TO HIM!!
I am so sad not to see you on tour here but believe that Karen and you should take time to stop and smell the roses together, as you have given a lifetime of pleasure to us all.

You were so down to earth and treated me like a friend. You always have time for your fans. There’s always a first time Bobby. You’re the first musical performer I’ve ever written to.
I was prompted by a good friend to check your web site. The short story was wonderful and so was the video. They moved me in a positive way. I navigated promptly to your discography on Wikipedia. It required less than a minute to pick out the list of songs that resonated with me. That’s not to say I wouldn’t have liked the many other songs, but I never had the opportunity to listen. As for my favorites, well, I never forgot them, and like many our age, I always marvel that I can remember the words verbatim, and the melody too, but frequently struggle a wee bit with such daunting ponderings as where and with whom did I have lunch yesterday. Pretty amazing considering I’ve not been diagnosed with any form of what you now say you harbor – at least, not yet. It’s been said that there are those who do and those who don’t, and I like to think I’m fortunate for being one who does: make strong connections between particular songs, the time, place and associated happy experiences. Along with my favorite tunes, my re-enjoyment comes to me both in specific memories as well as in periods or eras of time, sometimes stretching over many months, years and even decades.
There’s little doubt that “Devil or angel”, “Run to him”, “Take good care of my baby”, “Rubber ball”, “The Night Has a Thousand Eyes”, and “Come Back When You Grow Up”, are most memorable to me. That spans well over a decade, but I continued to enjoy them, and within the last year, I did purchase your greatest hit CD, to replace the one I wore out. So really, your music has gifted me with a lifetime of enjoyment and pleasure. And through your music, I’m able to relive all the happy surrounding memories of girl friends, classmates, my car record player and 8-track, and much more.
My mind is bursting with many surreal feelings at this instant. For the majority of the past 66 years, I would never have guessed I would ever be writing to you, or, that you might have suggested such, nor that you would be interested in my thoughts, and that I would accomplish the communication electronically – who knew! Another aspect of this soul sharing is that truly, time is the ultimate equalizer, and I no longer feel that we are separated by your huge success and notoriety. As it turns out, we are merely two more examples of decent folk who work hard to make a living, enjoy friends and family, attempt to make the world a better place, and to do as little harm to other folk and nature as possible during our journey. Truly, we shall end our journey at the same destination, though likely at a different time.
I am with you spiritually, and I shall thank you for the hours and hours of great music that warmed my heart and brought joy to my life since 1960 and beyond. I shall keep you and family in my prayers daily. Over the decades you always seemed like a decent soul, and now that suspicion was verified.

Being born in ’61 my memory of pop music was of the 70’s-80’s. I missed out on Bobby Vee’s generation of music. Last week I “discovered” Bobby Vee when I happened to run across a Scopitone music video “The night has a thousand eyes” on Youtube. I’m hooked and now a fan. God bless him and his family. Hi Bobby, Prayers and thoughts are with you and Karen. I met you back in 1983 and saw you every year at Ironworld in Chisholm. Every year we took our traditional picture and every year i brought it back so i could get you to sign it, and take another one. That lasted until your last year at Ironworld in 1995. Those were such special years I treasure my album with all our pictures together, and truely treasure all the concerts my husband and i got to see. Then we saw you at Fortune Bay for a couple of years, and also at the Virginia High School where you and Fabian and others played for the benefit concerts for the Hibbing College Law Enforcement Scholarships. I’m very sorry for your losses. Hospital situations can bring people close together. You’re all there for the same reason, and you pray for each other. I can just imagine how difficult it must be when one doesn’t make it. Bobby, I am 63 now and have listened to your songs every since I was in high school. I love them and I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I know this disease well, as m y grandmother and mother had and died from this disease. I know that cancer is bad, but I think losing your mind is much harder. Your family sounds just wonderful and they will be there for you. It is so good that your wife got her operation and I hope that she has a speedy recovery. Just keep spending your time with your family and making memories, because in the end that is all we have but our memories. My dad died when he was 51 from a massive heart attack and missed both my brothers weddings and only the birth of 2 grandchildren, my 1st two kids, but not the youngest one and the other 7 from my brothers. I will pray for you, that maybe they will have some control measures for this disease in your lifetime, as I have heard on Dr Oz. Stay optimistic and healthy otherwise. Dear Bobby, I was a mere 8 years old when “Come Back When You Grow Up” was released. At that point I went searching for all your music and discovered a landslide of songs that would become lifetime favorites. Songs like “Suzie Baby” , “Take Good Care of my Baby, “Charms” and “Rubber Ball” would have never been major hits had they not been performed by you.

Two songs ,”Take Good Care of My Baby” and “The Night Has A Thousand Eyes” will forever remind me of a girl I was crazy about but she would not even give me the time of day. Her name was Laura. Even now, that I am in the autumn of my years, everytime I hear those two songs, I think of Laura and how it would’ve been to spend my life with her. But, life is indeed a mystery. Phew! I just read Tommy’s compelling update on what’s been happening with his dear Mom. Thank you for that. As things started to get more tense in your story, I found myself reading faster and faster, in anticipation of what would happen next. You definitely had “angels” watching over you. I am so relieved to know that all is better now after your scare. It’s amazing how those medications can help one thing, but then cause harm in certain combinations. But things are back on the positive side again, and that’s definitely a really good thing. I’m just sorry you had to go through that.
I couldn’t help but chuckle at Tommy’s comments on him being the “favored one” Ha. It makes me think of Bobby’s shows, when he would introduce the boys. And when it came to Tommy, he’d just shake his head and ask “How many of you have a “Tommy” in your family?” As we would know what he meant. Tommy, thank you for your wit. Am sure it’s a great and much-needed source of comfort to your Mom and Dad.
I’m sure you probably wonder if things will ever get back to normal. Well, you just hang in there and keep thinking good thoughts. You do the healing and we’ll do the praying.

Whilst I was saddened to hear your news it made me reflect on my earliest memories of you when I was around 13/14 years of age. Those early hits, great “B” sides too!
I did my growing up to your songs. Many years later I got to meet you over dinner at Wembley, UK where you performed with a host of other stars including my old buddy Duane Eddy. You told me about Eddie Brackett taking care and time in mixing down your music into those beautiful stereo masters. You were a perfect gentleman and so friendly. I have a box set of your singles along with a collection of twofer double album CD sets of superb rock and roll, standards, love songs and a collaboration with The Crickets – after all these years I still get immense pleasure from them all. I now run a radio station targetted at the over fifties and guess who gets a lot of plays? Your good self of course and I have often shared my meeting with you back in the 1980’s with my listeners.

Bobby, I am a North Dakota girl myself. I loved your music and knew and still know all the words to your songs. I had the priviledge of meeting you when I lived in Fargo, North Dakota. I worked with a gentlemen (Bob) who said he went to school with you and knew you as a close friend. Of course I did not believe him, he was such a joker all the time. Low and behold, you danced over to our table and took my hand! I almost melted in my seat…..Later you came over to the table and everyone talked and laughed about old times. Such a loving and supportive family. What a blessing. By the way, that picture that you included of your Mom was adorable. Such a beautiful lady, still with her “little girl” charm. My husband and I and his sister were eating at Fishers’ Club one Friday night and you along with your family walked in and said hello to Sally. My sister-in-law wanted to run up and tell you that she saw you the first time she wore her straight skirt. I had everything I could do to keep her seated. I regret that I held her back. Wish I would have come up to you and thanked you for sharing your music and let you get a good laugh about the “skirt” experience!
So sorry to hear about about your cognitive diagnosis and Karen’s health issues. As I read, she had a lung transplant. I pray it turned out well.
I want you to know that I walked with you in my heart during the Walk to end Alzheimer’s on September 29, 2012 at Lake George in St. Cloud. My eldest sister was diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment this past spring, my dear friend from St. Cloud, Mary, was diagnosed a year ago, my father, grandfather, and brother in law all passed with Alzheimer’s. My niece is coordinator of Alzheimer’s Minnesota – North Dakota chapter and works in the St. Cloud office. Carol works 7 days a week toward the end of this devastating disease — to promote awareness and provide and enhance support for those affected. She introduced a memory support group for both the caregiver and the person affected in the spring that was so successful the members requested they continue on, so it begins again in November. I heard Bob Hoye speak so enthusiastically about his experience with the group at the Walk and just wanted to make sure I let you know that it is available if you want to check it out as are other good programs right here. Know that you are not alone and you are loved.

It’s been a long time since we last corresponded (1999); but, I still treasure the time we hosted you and your family during your first visit/concert at The Villages in Florida. My daughter Marney (who was 12 years old then) and I most enjoyed our visit to St. Augustine. I thank you again for giving me the record with “It might as well rain until September”.
Since then, I retired from the music promotion business and moved to Port Orange (just south of Daytona Beach to spend more time with my family. My only daughter Marney developed a very rare liver disease that caused her to have two strokes while in college and a subsequent kidney transplant. This November 2 she will be celebrating her 26th birthday. I share this information with you and Karen, in efforts of giving you hope. All things are possible with God’s help and you and her will certainly be in my prayers. I’m not sure if Karen has had her lung transplant yet, but let her know that Marney celebrated her second anniversary and the new anti rejection medications are wonderful and with very little side effects. Marney received her kidney at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, where she continues to be a patient. Her underlying disease requires weekly visits. Again, I will pray for both of you and trust that God will keep you in his palm and slow down the progression of your desease. Please say hello to the rest of your family. Your boys fondly called Marney “Hank”. I keep the autograph rubber ball in my memorabilia room!

Growing up on the East Coast of Canada and coming home from school to listen to the Radio and hearing Bobby Vee was a real treat. We have been going through his belongings and found this letter from you. We are praying that you and your wife are better. Ron had told us you were sick and he was so upset about it. He suffered at the last and we know he is in a better place and with his two sons now. His graveside service is this Friday the 23rd, he will be buried between his sons.We could not find an address book of Ron’s so we thought you might get this email, he would want you to know about his passing. It was 1960 in the UK at the Bournemouth Winter Gardens.
I can pretty well remember most of the acts that shared the concert with you … There were the Springfields a trio (Dusty Springfield was a member) Clarence ‘Frogman’ Henry, Billy Burden a local comedian. I was 9 years old and totally in love with you! My very first crush! You were such a big part of my growing up and the music keeps me young!!!
I also remember you used to have a 15 minute radio slot on Radio Luxemburg? on a monday night and I was allowed to stay up late to listen to you!
I still love to listen to your music today and will go on listening until I am no longer able!

I keep some tabs when I can find Robby and his great stage show at the casino from time to time. Hope Jeff and Tommy are in some reunion concerts again in this area this coming 2013 summer.. When ever I drive by the Pavilion, on little Detroit lake I think of You and the 60’s energy and fun that came from that historic building.

I was a 14 year old budding musician in 1961 when you appeared at the Hamburg Field House in Hamburg, PA. I was mesmerized by your show as I stood off to the side of the stage. When you finished and with the crowd clapping, you walked down the steps of the stage, looked right at me and smiled, then shook my hand. I never forgot how genuine and unaffected you seemed at that moment. I played in bands in high school and college, then didn’t play in an organized group for 35 years until 7 years ago. A couple of friends and I formed an oldies group and played out for about five years. We had four Bobby Vee songs on our gig list and I sang them. Thanks for the memories, Bobby! All the best to you!

Bobby, my name is Larry Peterson and I am Stan and Mary Peterson’s great nephew. I was also born in Fargo in 1946 and lived there and Detroit Lakes for several years. Every summer we went back to Detroit Lakes to spend time with my relatives. It was with my Aunt Mary that I met you for the first time. I was also living in Portland , Oregon when both her and Stanley died. She was a wonderful lady. You came to Portland to perform in the 60’s and you had tickets waiting for myself and my brother , Bill, at the door. I really enjoyed visiting with you after your fantastic concert. In early 1960 I got my first radio and four singers hit me and became my favorites right from the start. Del Shannon, Gene Pitney, Roy Orbison and my number one Bobby Vee. Great voices and great songs. They sang the anthems to my youth. Some years later I was fortunate enough to meet Bobby at a show in Garden City, Michigan. I got my courage up as I saw him standing alone and ran to him and gushed as so many fans do. Lo and behold he treated me as a friend. I have seen him many times since and he always treated me and my family like friends. We had the lights go out on us at a motel where Bobby performed with Del Shannon in Finley, Ohio during a storm. How cool is hanging out with Bobby in his motel room while he told us stories in the dark? I gave Bobby a ride from his motel to a performance in Cleveland where a security guard stopped us. I got upset and Bobby, in his usually unflappable manner, explained to the guard he was in the show. In the show? He was the star! I could go on and on but Bobby is as nice and sincere as his voice has always been and always will be on my vinyl albums. Like the button I gave his son says” Bobby Vee should be “Stayin In ” the rock and roll hall of fame. Thank you, Jim, Cher, Scott and Jessie Mason.

I met Bobby on the Oldies Cruise put on by Harmon Travel. My grandson was playing in the arcade and ran out of money. He went over to Bobby and asked to borrow a quarter. He gave him a dollar! I was so embarrassed but Bobby just took it in stride and thought it was cute.

Last night I was listening to 50’s and 60’s music with an old friend from those good times. Rubber Ball came on and we got to thinking about you so checked on Wikipaedia and your website. I read your blog and most of the comments and now it’s 5.28am here in Glasgow, Scotland. Wow, so much love and respect from your fans, you must be a truly special guy. Never saw you in concert but of course loved many of your songs, my favourite being Suzie Baby, a song which Buddy would have been proud to have written. I think he must have been guiding your hand. Another of my all time favourites is Sway, which I heard for the first time on your B side of Rubber Ball, I think, hope I’m right, it was over 50 years ago!

Okay, It’s frustrating, but I’ll explain it. Back in the 60s, Jerry Lee Lewis was in a tiff because his records weren’t being played anymore. And he made a comment that has gotten a lot of press over the years, something to the effect of, “It’s all about “Bobby’s” now. It’s Bobby this and Bobby that. I’m surrounded by Bobbys.” So, I was making a bit of a play on words because I’m sure Bobby Vee is familiar with that comment, because he was one of the “targets” of Jerry Lee Lewis’s rant. I did leave a pretty obvious clue to the unspoken fact that it was Jerry Lee Lewis is was always billed on his Sun records as “Jerry Lee Lewis and his Pumping Piano”. And it would seem to me that many of the good folks in the UK would be pretty familiar with Jerry Lee Lewis and his pumping piano. It was a spontaneous thought that came to me as I was reading the posts, and I was making it for the general readers of the blog, not just you specificially. Hopefully a few folks understood my intentions and got a chuckle out it.

I didn’t realize that Jerry Lee Lewis’s nose was put out by all the Bobby’s being so popular at the time. They all earned their status in the music business but I wasn’t into Jerry Lee and his piano. What a celebrated life. How fortunate to have fallen in love once and to have 4 children that followed in your footsteps to make music for so many generations.
I adored you as a teenager. You were my favorite artist. Raised on “Rubber Ball”, “Take Good Care of My Baby” and “The Night has a Thousand Eyes”, I’ve loved music for a lifetime. My wife and I still break out into these songs on long car trips. You enriched our lives.
Today we enjoy Bobby Vee radio on Pandora all the time. Alzheimers is indeed a bummer, but in the game of life, you won…a long time ago. You enriched so many lives and somehow, through all of that fame, managed to keep body and soul together to love one wife and raise 4 great kids.

I LOVED BOBBY VEE MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE ON THE PLANET FROM WAY BACK IN THE EARLY 1960’S 🙂 . Before you traveled the world, I was President of your Fan Club on Staten, New York. I bought every record and teen magazine that came out and begged my Mom to take me to a live show in New York City to see you. You signed my album and you were as cute and sweet as I thought you would be. In September of 1963 I met my own Bobby Vee and thank God….because I never would have gotten over you getting married that December. And, by the way, you did awesome. She is beautiful and you two are perfect together (and it never could have worked out for us because I wouldn’t have been able to share you with the world). HAPPY 50 ANNIVERSARY. Even though you both were so young….you knew it was right. I followed your career for many years but then with marriage (to my high school sweetheart from 1963), four children and now ten grandchildren life was busy. A few years ago (thank God for computers) I looked you up and was thrilled to see you still singing, still in love and now with your handsome and talented sons playing music with you and on their own. Wow, that made me happy. Just last week I was checking on my Bobby Vee again…and was concerned to find out the challenges you, Karen and of course your sons and daughter are facing. I was so proud and inspired to see how you and your family were handling these trying times. You have shown us all how much you care about us, by letting us be part of this journey. My big brother was born in 1941, me in 1951, so at an early age I was an ardent Everly Bros, and Roy Orbison fan. Then in 6th grade, while my brother was off to college, I started making my own discoveries, “Take Good Care of My Baby” became one of my all-time favorite songs, and I played it non-stop on my record player! I can see why Bob Dylan calls you the “nicest person” he’d ever shared a stage with. I saw Bobby on February 10, 1962 at the GRANADA TOOTING movie theater in London. I was an excited 13 year old and Bobby was my hero. What a wonderful show. Dusty Springfield was in the show with THE SPRINGFIELDS, early days. And Clarence Frogman Henry. Bobby inspired me to get up there, which I did for some years touring England with our band ThE MoTiVaTioN. My girl friends and I also were at that show in fact we were at the 1st and 2nd performances. It was Saturday November 24th and we had circle seats for the 1st and stall seats for the 2nd. We had to walk home as we missed our last bus. It took us a long time as we lived near Crystal Palace (Dulwich). We didn’t mind one bit as we were all on a high.
We also saw him at Woolwich on Monday November 12th. Did you ?
I was lucky enough to meet Bobby twice once on October 27th and then on the 29th at EMI house. We followed him back to his Hotel he was staying at the Mayfair room 407. On the 3rd November he was moving on to another.
No, I don’t have a computer for a brain I just have scrap books full of pics and writings of our wonderful days as a fan of Bobby’s.
There is a regret that I had a photo taken with Bobby by a taxi by my friends which I never got a print of. Never mind. Can’t have everything.

I started school in a one room school house in a little hamlet named Anerley, Saskatchewan. I believe the teacher I had at the time, Arvid Tapinalla, was related to you. I attended a Ronny Profet concert in about 1979 and was so pleased to learn that you were the lead in act. We ran into the Tapinallas at that concert and they said they were hoping to meet up with you afterward. While I was going to University I used to play your LP over and over again. When I finally got a CD player a few years ago I was having a great deal of trouble finding any of yours and it was a relation in England who found a couple and sent them to me. After reading your history I understand why they were more readily available in England. They were played over and over in my car until my kids were even singing along. Last year a couple of friends of mine, Tony and Linda Korte, were at a ball game in the USA and said they were sitting behind your family. They informed me of your illness. Both of my parents had Alzheimers so I am pretty sure I am destined to have the same. I am impressed with your positive attitude in dealing with this disease.

I met you for the first time in Japan in 1962 at the Meiji Club in Washington Heights. You made a joke about losing your money in the slot
machines and would maybe have to stay for a while. I started clapping and the rest of the audience followed suit. I was in the front row so
you were very close and you sang “More than I can Say”. It was a tiny stage and at one point you were close to the edge. When you sang
“Whoa whoa yeah, yeah,” you stood on your tip toes as I gasped because I thought you were going to fall off the stage. You looked at me and said
“Scared you didn’t I?” I still even remember the gesture as you pointed at me.
The next time we met you were doing a concert at the Ramstein NCO club. I went to Germany with my parents as a college student. The night you
were to perform I went to the club at noon for lunch, brought a book and staked out a table close to the stage. I was dating a GI and I told him
earlier in the day that I would save him a chair up front. That GI came backstage with me afterwards and took the best picture of you and me.
He also asked me to marry him and we have been married for 45 years. You know him as Chuck. That picture now sits at the bottom of your
“from the fans” page, along with a picture of you, my grandson Jimmy, and me at the Dick Clark Cafe.
I saw you again in England at the Royal Albert Hall. Chuck and I had been in England for a couple of years. I heard you on
the radio and called to order tickets as soon as the interview was over. That was in November, the same month as our anniversary so when I got
home I said to Chuck, “guess what we are doing….” I missed seeing you by a a few minutes, but Rick Nelson walked right past us on his way
back to the stage.
When you came to Tulsa I just had to go up there to see you. I brought you a copy of “the Picture” on a scrapbook page. You signed my picture
and gave me your email address. Then you told us about a cruise you were going to be on with The Lovin Spoonful, Paul Revere and several others.
We booked that cruise and saw you several times. When we had breakfast together, I brought some 45 record covers with your picture and your name
in Japanese. You said you hadn’t seen them before so I took them to the Purser’s office and got copies for you. I will never forget when two servers
came up to our table and saw the records and asked if you were Elvis Presly. We both had a good laugh.
When I emailed you with the story of “scared you didn’t I”? You actually took the time to find the recording of that show and send it to me
on a CD. Who else in show business would do such a thoughtful thing?”
I can’t thank you enough for all the wonderful memories you have given me. Chuck was so good about going with me to every venue. He thanks
you too.

First let me say how much I’ve treasured all your music and movies. I saw you onstage at Silver Springs in early 2002 and met you after the show. I brought with me the 1st LP that I had ever owned, since I was 7, and I was so awestruck that I got your autograph on it.

met bobby vee when working in a night club near Manchester and his band with my brother Keith who was killed in a car accident i my self living in Scotland at the age of 62 hope mr b vee is coping ok and his family i was reminiscing about the past of all the people i have met and bobby vee was a gentleman and of course a great singer i do miss the past events but as mr vee said the old is not for the week?or meek.and i can’t complain as in good health but trying to cope with loneliness of absent friends gone by 😊 Richard
A decade ago, I saw Bobby Vee at the Cliffs Pavilion, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England. He and his band (including his son), put on a terrific performance. The main thing I came away with was how natural and unaffected by fame Bobby was. His warmth and good humour are an enduring memory to me along with the great music he made. I go back to the time of Buddy Holly, and remember Bobby stepping in with his band, The Shadows, at that tragic moment in rock’n’roll history when he was called upon to continue the Winter Dance Party.

You are one of the few entertainers who didn’t let fame go to his head and, obviously, your family came first. So I’m sure they are putting you first and I will keep you in my prayers and there is a cure for Alzheimer’s soon.

Dear Bobby and Vee family, I haven’t written in a while and I regret that lapse. Your family sure has had its mountains to climb. We all understand that God does not play favorites. I know we all were sadden by the passing of our mutual friend, Rod McKuen, in January. Rod and I had been friends since 1966. Bobby, I don’t know how many of Rod’s tunes you may have recorded over the years, but no doubt we all can agree he left a large body of work for which we will all remember and enjoy. The world, too, still thrives on your music. Hi Bobby, Jim Helwig here, keyboard player for “The Casinos” (1967, “Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye”). I just read about the untimely passing of your wife. Please accept my sincere condolences. I too have a lung issue (pulmonary hypertension) that may require transplant. My understanding is that your wife did in fact have a lung transplant, but there were problems. Since this is a decision I may be facing shortly, please let me know what your experience was reagarding transplant. You’ll have my email address, use that so that your reply is private.
I arrived at this blog attempting to do a bit of research on a Bobby Vee song “Remember Me Huh” and I couldn’t even find the songwriter’s name, let alone lyrics, let alone tabs. It wasn’t a chart hit, but I do vaguely remember it as being on some album I heard when I was a kid. Sorry to hear about the Alzheimer’s diagnosis…my dad died with it and it’s a tragedy I’m all too familiar with…very sorry to hear that. I wouldn’t wish that on anybody. But I’m still in the dark about information about that song, even after visiting this site, so I’m out of further options to pursue. All the best.

There’s just something about that particular song that has a ring to it when dealing with Alzheimers. It might be all that is remembered when other things fade.

Bobby, I have fond memories of seeing you and your band The Shadows at the Hollyhock Ballroom in Hatfield, Minnesota while I was in high school. Thanks to Tom Tourville’s book on the Hollyhock just published last year, it was in February of 1960. Back then we had heard of your filling in at the loss of Buddy Holly and the others the year before, so we were excited that you were keeping the music alive. I have followed your career since and still play your music now on CD format. I am also a singer and performer locally, and include several of your songs during appearances. I’ve been now keeping up with the latest, finding your web site, etc. I’m also in touch with your friend Myron Lee and enjoying his 8 mm movies of your touring together in the early to mid-1960’s. In addition, I was please to meet your son Tommy after the concert in which he was playing bass for the Nelson twins Matthew and Gunnar here in Michigan, where I live now. I am so sorry to hear about Bobby’s passing. He and I were childhood friends. We attended elementary school etc together. In high school all of his classmates thoroughly enjoyed dancing to the Shadows. Sandy was at MSU when Bobby was dating her. She was crazy about him and he was crazy about her. When he could get to Moorhead, he would always come to the dorm and take her out. Of course, her fellow college classmates were envious. Knowing Bobby was special. I had the pleasure and the privilege of performing in two of Bobby’s shows in the U.K. several years ago…he was the nicest kindest man I have ever met…an absolute delight…my heart goes out to his family…a great loss to the music world…a true legend.
I am so sorry to hear about your past year, the loss of your mother and now your father. I was blessed to spend some time talking with him when we did the lengthy feature about his amazing career. He was a fabulous story teller with wonderful tales to tell, his music lives on and on and those who had the pleasure of meeting him will never forget his kindness. His legacy is of optimism, joy, love of family and great music that resides in the hearts of millions of people around the world.
This is to Bobby’s family; I know he passed away and the news was carried by the major networks. I’m just a fan who is sorry to hear this, and offer my condolences to those who were closer to him. Alzheimer’s isn’t for the meek, either, especially those who are caretakers. It’s why none of Bobby’s biggest hits hit home at this time; just one of his album selections titled “Remember Me Huh”. It’ll be the biggest challenge for a lot of us in the future. ❤

Hello – My name is Brian D Etienne -. in 1983 I was in the St Cloud area with my Christian group at the St Cloud High School. I play the drums – and after we performed – A gentleman asked me If I could stay and rehearse for a show. They are looking for a drummer to fill in. It happened to be a promoter for Fabian, Bobby Rydel and Bobby Vee. I said sure – so I quickly learned the song set – It was a thrill for me to say the least to play drums for Those guys and especially Bobby Vee. He was so kind, talented and wonderful. This is an experience I will never forget. Thanks Bobby – I still have the poster that was used for promotion that evening, !!!
